Welcome to our pages, could you tell our readers something more about the band and the music you create?
Skalmold is an Icelandic Metal band. We formed the band in August 2009 and have since released two albums, "Baldur" in 2010 (released in 2011 by Napalm Records) and "Born Loka" in late 2012. Our music has been labeled viking/folk metal, but to us it´s just metal, but the lyrics and themes we use are though most certainly Viking.
Have you ever been in Croatia before?
No, this is our first time in Croatia. And we´re looking forward to it. It´s always great to come to new countries, new cities, and play your music. And with Finntroll and Tyr on the bill as well, it's going to be a great night.
Is there any song in the last album that you really prefer and why?
My favorite from our last album is Vali. It was a tough song to do, we spent a lot of time making it work and the end result is really great. This song has such a nice build up. Plus, it´s one of my favorites to play live.
How is the teamwork in the band? Mostly comes from 1 or two of you guys or from each one of you?
The lyrics are all written by our bass player, Snæbjörn. The music is teamwork. We all write the music and we discuss the songs a lot within the band and a try to find ways to make them work as a team.
What is the main message that you want your listeners to get from your music and lyrics?
Both our albums are concept albums, telling one story. Snabjörn, writes the lyrics and his main goal is to write solid stories. There´s no message, hidden or visible. Just solid storytelling.
What kind of music you listen outside of what you are making?
I mostly listen to metal and punk. There are very few bands outside these two genres that are on my playlist. The list of bands is endless but to name a few of my favorites I would go for Unleashed, Primordial, Opeth, Slayer, Iron Maiden and Bad Religion. But like I said the list could easily fill pages.
What made you start playing and writing Viking/folk metal music?
The love of metal music. We all grew up listening to metal and played in various metal bands when we were younger. But in the years prior to Skalmold most of the band members had been involved with many bands, mostly non-metal. But we all had one thing in common; we had never recorded and released a metal album. So Snaebjorn gathered around him the people we would like to work with and we just started from scratch. And the Viking/Folk theme came very naturally. We wanted to incorporate our heritage with our music. And since Iceland is rich with Viking lore and folk music it was a very natural progression.
Are you satisfied with the position you have in this music world and what would you like to achieve as a band?
So far we are very satisfied. We had no other intention when we started than to release a decent metal album, one we could be proud of when we get old. So for us to become one of the biggest musical acts in Iceland, get signed, go on tours abroad, etc. it's so much more than we ever hoped for. And the best thing about it is that we have done everything on our own terms. I hope we can go on like this in the nearest future, write music, go on tours and expand our fanbase at home and abroad. So far it´s been an enjoyable ride and we would like to keep it that way.
What are your plans for the year ahead of us?
We are hoping to be able to release a new album sometime late next year. If al works in our favor I´m pretty sure it's going to work. We have played a lot of shows in Iceland the past 2-3 years and we would like to play more abroad in 2014. So heopefully we will a whole lot more of Europe next year.
You come from Iceland. How big is metal scene over there? Have you any new bands from Iceland to recommend?
The metal scene in Iceland has been growing really fast in the past few years. There are more and more people coming to shows, buying albums and getting involved in the scene. So the future is definitely looking bright for Icelandic metal. We do have some really talented bands up here. I'm pretty sure most of you have heard of Solstafir. If I have to recommend a few I advise you to check out Beneath, Angist, Ophidian I and The Vintage Caravan, all very good in their own genre. I would also like to mention our metal festival, Eistnaflug. Held in July every year. If you ever have the chance of coming to Iceland, make sure to come the Eistnaflug weekend, it´s the best party in the world.
Is there anything special you would like to say to your fans in Croatia and those who will become after the hear you play?
Just come and enjoy the show. We are really looking forward to come to Croatia for the first time. It will be a great night of beer and metal. Skál!
Thank you for this interview and see you soon in Zagreb!
