Hello guys, nice to hear from you again. So we talked three years ago about lots of things such as the meaning of your band's name, band members and your third album „Falsvs Anno Domini“. I will start this interview with a very simple question.
What's new with Ennui? Where have you been and what have you done since 2016.?
Well, the most important and special thing that happened since 2016 is ''END OF THE CIRCLE''. Probably the best album we made was unleashed under the mark of Non Serviam Records.
As you mentioned, 2018. was a very special year for you. In September of 2018. you've released your fourth album „End Of The Circle“. Please tell us something about this 72 minutes long funeral doom/death masterpiece (in my humble opinion). Is it a concept album? What and who was your main inspiration? What are the main lyrical themes that are „floating“ through your music?
Yes, this is conceptual album and also this is our new format of song composing. I mean here we left behind the familiar to us method of songwriting and made something new - huge songs with special epmhasis on instrumental part, ambient landscapes and some imporovisations. But inspiration as always was got from our life. A lot of things happend in our life during last years, some things were good, some things were very bad. The lyrical part is a philosophical point of view on our life and the Universe around us. It's about an endless whirl of life and death which has no end. We decided to imagine the end of it, end of this obscure circle of existence. Also both parts of ''The Withering'' songs are about the solitude under the starlit sky and the ghost light of long-dead stars upon us. As usual: no hopes, no escape, no joy.
What are the differences between this album and the others? Do you think your sound has evolved in some way? I know it's hard to say but where do you see Ennui's music in, for example, ten years?
The main and obvious difference is the level of production of course. This time we had a honor to work with a very talented sound engineer and a simply wonderful person - George Bokos from Athens. Our album was mixed and mastered at his studio and he really did his best. It was a great chance to work together. The cover art was made by very talanted and famous artist W. Smerdulak. And at least this is our first album released in Europe. Our music became more meaningful for our old and new fans and friends. Yes it's definitely hard to say how I see Ennui in ten years because we never use to have some huge plans for future. But I'm sure that in ten years our creativity will still remain honest and sincere.
There have been some changes in your lineup. Daniel is no longer your drummer. Can you tell us what happened?
I would like to refrain from details of what exactly happened. I'm sure it's a boring story. Our paths simply diverged and each of us continued his own things. But John Devos from USA joined us as studio drummer and that's very cool. We are extremely happy to work with him. This guy perfectly suits our band and really understands our music. I guess John is very happy too. He's already ready to record drums for next album.
Do you have any concerts planned? Is there any chance we could hear you somewhere near Croatia? What do you think about metal festivals in Europe such as Wacken, Hellfest, Metaldays and Brutal Assault. Do you see yourselves performing on some of them in the future?
No exact plans yet. Maybe if someone will have interest to invite us - sure, we would play a show in Croatia with a big pleasure! Of course it would be very great to play on world-wide metal festivals like Wacken, Hellfest ect. Maybe in future, lets see how things will be.
In our earlier conversation you've mentioned working in side projects and some other bands. So, please tell us something about them (name, genre, albums...).
Yes. I personally have some another projects. One of them is Comatose Vigil A.K. Legendary funeral doom metal band from Russia which was disbanded several times but raised from dead one year ago by vocalist A.K.iEzor. I play on guitars/bass/keyboards there and making all music. Also John Devos on drums. We also released an album ''EVANGELIUM NIHIL'' on Non Serviam Records in December of 2018.
I also have my one-man band called Unsaved. But nothing special is released yet, except one split album with Russian doomers The Extinct Dreams. Currently I'm making some new stuff for this project. Also Sergei is busy with his death metal band Angel of Disease. They are making new album too. I recommend to check them out - they are veterans of Georgian metal scene.
I'm very curious about what's been happening in Georgia's metal scene in the last three years?
I do not follow news about Georgian metal scene for last years. But I know that it is slowly but surely developing. For example the band Every Dog Has Its Day (the band of our live guitarist) is succeed. They used to play at Wacken Open Air last year and it was a great experience for them and definitely their music is the new word in Georgian Metal Culture. Also band Psychonaut 4 are very famous. I guess it's the only Georgian metal band which is well know in a whole world. The had a lot of tours during 2018-2019. I hope other bands from Georgia will also succed very soon.
What do you and Sergei do for living (daily jobs) and does it have any connection with music?
No. Both of us work in sphere of IT. Routine work, grey days and nothing unusual or special. You know, living here in Georgia music is the last thing you have to expect your incomes from. Life in Georgia is permanently hard and it's almost a feat to pay attention to your band, doing your best to develop it and make it interesting for listeners abroad. So unfortunately our daily jobs has no connection with music.
Thank you again for this interview. It was a pleasure to talk to you again. Do you have any messages for our readers and doom metal people of Croatia?
Thanks for your questions and thanks to all of our listeners. I really hope that some times we will have a chance to meet doom metal people from wonderful Croatia! Thanks!
