Mike, welcome to the Croatian Metal And Rock web zine!
Mike, welcome to the Croatian Metal And Rock web zine!
Thank you so much Ante, it 's a pleasure to speak to the Croatian Metal fans!!
For starters, allow me to introduce us a little bit. We are the oldest Croatian metal portal, in business from the 1999., and as we like to say: ''Riding the storm since '99!'' What is going on with Attacker at this moment? Some line-up changes; you have a new bass player and new vocalist is announced, if I am correct? Tell me something about them.
Yes, we have a new vocalist, Bobby 'Leathelungs' Lucas who has sung with Morbid Sin, Seven Witches and Overlorde. Our new bass player is Jon Hanemann, he is a monster player and with the addition of these two individuals, makes us a much stronger unit. Luckily for us, these guys just happened to be in the right place at the right time and it all came together very effortlessly!
There had been a lot of personnel changes in the band. What were the main reasons for that, some personal issues or disagreement, or was it just musical problems and different views?
It's been a mix of all of those reasons. Most were personal disagreements, people just don't get along, but in the case of our old bassist Lou Ciarlo, he wanted to go in a different direction and we still are the best of friends. We have had a few members pass away unfortunately, but for the most part it was time for certain people to go and make room for new blood.
New album is on the way. When can we expect it? Is it going to be some changes in the sound and lyrical themes?
We are hoping to have it done and out by years end, but ultimately, it will take as long as it needs for us to be satisfied with it's outcome. We are currently working on six new songs at the moment with more to follow. Musically it will be in the vein of out last album, 'The Unknown'. Lyrically, Bobby has been writing stuff the that with historical figures, biblical stuff as well as mythology. It's all still in it's early stages but it's coming along really well.
Speaking of lyrics, Attacker is one of the first metal bands to use the literary works of J.R.R. Tolkien as a source of inspiration. It's nothing new for today bands, for ''new'' kind of metal, but back then, when you started, that fact was a little bit unusual. Don't you think?
Nothing specific, we have run the whole gamut of themes from fantasy to real world happenings (The Second Coming was based on the cold war between the U.S and Russia). What comes out of us at the time is what it is, we don't purposely follow a guideline.
It definitely was, but Lord of the Rings was a pretty well known piece of work, just not really applied to music so much. Led Zeppelin had already referenced it, but I guess for metal bands, we were one if not the first to do so.
KEEP IT TRUE, is the absolute best festival out there. The people who run it are great and you get the chance to meet so many awesome people who, if you attend frequently as I have done, become great friends! You have to experience it, all true metal fans should at least once!
Fantasy, history, tales, fairy tales, aggression.. Are there any other themes that Attacker is attached to?
We are not sure what next year will bring just yet. We are confirmed to play The Metal Assault III festival on Feb. 3rd 2013 in Wurzburg, Germany. Our focus is on the new album at the moment, once it's done we will look to the future for shows and such.
Tell me something about Keep It True festival, I never had an opportunity to attend one of those..
It's definitely a new chapter and we couldn't be more ready!! We have had a few years off and are really hungry to get back to form doing what we do best, playing killer Heavy Metal!!
Next year Attacker will celebrate a 30th year anniversary. Can your fans expect something special, beside new album. Big world tour maybe, or at least some European Summer festivals?
Unfortunately no, I had not heard about it. I most definitely must check it out!!
So we can say that Attacker is entering a next chapter, are you ready for it?
You know what, you never know. If I know who to contact and we come to an agreement that suits all parties, why not!!!
In June this year, in Croatia there will be the first edition of Croatian Metalfest Open Air festival, 3 days of metal, by the sea. The first European Metal festival on the coast of the sea, in the 3000 years old town of Zadar. Have you heard of it?
I would say my parents, my Father is no longer with us but he had a huge impact on me and I miss him everyday... My Mom is awesome and is a very positive and supportive influence. Musically, everything I hear influences me in some way, whether I know it or not.
The intention is to make it traditional festival, so maybe next year, for the Attacker anniversary, first time in Croatia!?
Too many to mention, I could go on for days, the metal community are all my friends!!!!
Who has influenced you the most in life, who do you admire, but not just musically, in general?
I believe it's positive, bands are able to reach people that they normally might not have had access to. The internet has had a lot to do with that. Although the whole illegal bootlegging thing has hurt bands trying to sell records.
Your best friends from metal world?
Yes, 30 years and technically 4 albums and one best of. Can't believe all those years have passed!
Globalization of music, is it positive thing and why?
Thanks for this opportunity and Hello to all the Croatian MetalHeads, hope to see you in person one day!!!
30 years of career, 5 albums?
